I'm Shauna James Ahern.

I’m a storyteller, connector, and lifelong lover of literature and cinema. And, as a teacher and Buddhist practitioner, I feel deep joy in introducing people to the structure at the heart of all great human stories.

I've been studying the hero's journey since I first read Joseph Campbell’s book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, in the early 1980s. When I watched Joseph Campbell talk with Bill Moyers on The Power of Myth, on PBS in 1989, I was forever dedicated to heroic journey stories.

My bliss is to teach people the heroic journey story structure so they can look at their lives through the lens of the universal human story. And know they're not alone.

Out of that joy, I started writing mini-essays about Stranger Things on Threads. They got so many comments and shares that I knew I had tapped into something people wanted to hear. So, I created this workshop.

I'll be your storyteller.

Here's what we're going to do:

  • I'll teach you the 12 steps of the heroic journey story structure that the Duffer brothers used to create this series.
  • We'll talk about the finale and why it felt satisfying.
  • I'll put you into breakout rooms to discuss the heroic journey of your favorite individual character.
  • We'll nerd out in the bliss of being together with people who love Stranger Things as much as we do.

“I am on a curiosity voyage, and I need my paddles to travel."

— Dustin Henderson

Oh, and if you cannot make it live, I'll send you the recording of the workshop the next day.

kind words from Some of the hundreds of people who responded to my essays on Stranger Things on THREADS.

“Thank you for this post. I was transported back to being in school and studying all sorts of literature, blissfully immersed in the journey, the arcs, and the point of it all. This was a great dive.

"The succinct category of this post gives me mental goosebumps that will last until I die. Possibly the best social media post I've ever read. Thank you.

“Brilliant breakdown, not only of the Stranger Things finale, but of storytelling itself. Worth a read, even if you didn’t see the show.”

“Damn that was good. Now I’m crying all over again. So so powerful. Thank you for that!"
